Designer Spotlight: GamFratesi and the Allegory Desk
by Marco Caroti
·
The work of GamFratesi is defined by a careful dialogue between cultures, materials, and history. Founded by Stine Gam and Enrico Fratesi, the studio consistently explores the intersection of Scandinavian clarity and Italian craftsmanship, producing designs that feel both restrained and expressive. This approach finds a clear expression in the Allegory Desk, designed for Gebrüder Thonet Vienna.
Rooted in the brand’s historic bentwood tradition, the Allegory Desk features a steam-bent beechwood structure that lends the piece a sense of lightness and continuity. Its most distinctive element — a circular cane screen inspired by Viennese straw weaving — introduces both visual identity and subtle functionality, acting as a spatial and symbolic backdrop to the workspace.
Compact in scale yet rich in detail, the desk balances architectural structure with domestic sensibility. It reflects GamFratesi’s ability to reinterpret historical techniques through contemporary form, creating a piece that feels grounded in craft while responding to the needs of modern interiors.
